I woke up shortly after two in the morning, freezing, with the bed sheet twisted around my leg, the blankets on the floor and the pillows nowhere to be found. I liberated myself from the sheet, careful not to wake Paul, who laid spread eagle, in all his glory on his back, taking up most of the mattress, and tip-toed around the bedroom gathering blankets and pillows, trying not to trip over shoes and piles of discarded clothes. I crawled back into bed, plumped a pillow then covered myself and part of Paul with the blanket. Then I stared into the darkness wondering what in the hell I was going to do.
How was I going to keep my mother from calling Paul's family, how was I going to throw a wedding together in less than a month and how was I going to investigate Don's death?
And then I thought about this young boy, Paul's alleged son, who was being forced forward into a mess that was none of his making. I felt sorry for him. He didn't deserve whatever drama was being foisted on him, and I had to imagine he was none too keen on any of it.
First things first. Paul and I needed to plan a strategy. I needed help and that would entail pulling in some trustworthy people who could help me out. That would be Andrea. Did I care that Aunt Vi thought I was pregnant? No, it likely distracted her from coming up with any other theories, so I'd just dodge any questions about why I wanted to keep the April wedding date from Mother and let her assume what she wanted. We all knew Mother would be moving back in with Aunt Vi and Uncle Henry to oversee wedding plans the minute she found out about the April date. It was a given that she'd drive everyone nuts like she had when she took care of Aunt Vi as she recovered from her broken wrist. Adding any warning to Aunt Vi about a potential war if Mother learned about Paul or his family was overkill.
Of course someone else might tell Mother, since she had so many friends still living in Snohomish. That meant no one at all could know about the new date until the last minute. Then, even if Mother did call Paul's family, they probably wouldn't have time to pull the alleged son out of school, descend upon Snohomish and become front-page news. Disaster could be averted by precise timing.
The thought of disaster brought me to Eric. With him back in town, Juliet may (hopefully) be sufficiently distracted to pose no problem for us, which brought me to her "deal."
Did I want whoever killed Don brought to justice? Definitely. And I definitely thought Michelle was guilty, although it was probably an accident and should be treated as such. I'd have to dig up enough evidence to show it wasn't premeditated and hand it over to Detective Thurman in as timely a manner as possible.
